Refurbish and Extension of Hospital Del Mar

1992 FAD Architecture Prize – Renovations and Rehabilitations 2018 Selected in the Panorama of Works at the 14th Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism

The Hospital del Mar was designated as the Olympic Hospital for the 1992 Games, prompting a major modernization of its spaces and equipment.

Additionally, the plan included a biomedical research park, an outpatient building, and the Municipal Medical Research Institute.

The renovation integrated the hospital into the waterfront, reconnecting historic pavilions from 1929 and consolidating the east façade of the health complex.

With the 2017 expansion, the west façade was completed, opening towards Barceloneta Park and improving the hospital’s relationship with the urban environment.

The first expansion phase incorporated energy efficiency measures and advanced technologies, marking the start of a transformation toward modern, functional spaces.

Currently, the second phase is in design, planning a unified building with clear formalization and optimal functionality, eliminating traces of previous expansions.

Notably, landscaped rooftop terraces on the third floor are designed for patients, families, and medical staff, easing the density of use across the Hospital del Mar complex.
